The Saddle Lake Cree Nation Community Wellness Program is located at the Eagle’s Healing Lodge. The program consists of services that intend to:

  • improve the mental health and well being of the Saddle Lake Band Members living in the community
  • strengthen and support the child, family and community using a holistic approach

The program is community based, community paced and ensures continuity of care, community wide participation and coordination and linkages of existing programs and activities.

Most of the activities are for people living in the community, some the programs require that it be specific to Saddle Lake Band Members.

BRIGHTER FUTURES INITIATIVE IS ALSO PART OF THIS PROGRAM:

This program has 6 modules under it’s umberella in working with and  developing programming that is geared toward children and youth in  ensuring a safe and healthy environment. The programs are:

1.  HEALTHY BABIES
**GOALS**
-To promote immunizations for all Saddle Lake infants and reduce
the incidence of infectious diseases

-To recognize that children are a gift from the Creator and entrusted to
our care

-To promote good health, growth and development of infants

**OBJECTIVES:**

-To increase campaigns, so parents will recognize that regular and up to
date immunizations are important to the healthy development of their child

-To welcome the New Year’s baby and support the well being of parents

-To increase awareness of the care and guidance needed for an infant’s
healthy development

**ACTIVITIES:**

-Provide incentives to parents who are up to date with their
infant’s immunization

-Purchase baby items for the New Year’s baby

-Purchase resource materials and new market items to aid in the care
of infants

3. CHILD DEVELOPMENT:

**GOALS:**

-To improve and maintain the healthy development of children in a
community based, holistic and integrated manner

-To enhance physical development programs which are already in place
for children and youth

-To promote healthy life style choices for children

-To promote the importance of proper nutrition for the healthy
development of children

**OBJECTIVES:**

-To increase awareness of child development resources
(available at the Saddle Lake Health Centre)

-To work in joint partnerships with other agencies on mutual program goals

-To share information with other agencies regarding healthy activities
available for children

-To enhance existing nutrition programs

**ACTIVITIES:**

-Purchase resource material regarding child development issues
and concerns. Inform community members of available resources

-Give financial support for healthy activity initiatives for the
Daycare and school aged children and youth

-Fund activities that promote the importance of healthy life style choices
4. MENTAL HEALTH

**GOALS:**
-To improve the mental health and well being of children and
youth in a positive and healthy environment

-To provide mental wellness as a part of the healthy
development of children and youth. *To promote the
importance of healthy family relations

**OBJECTIVES:**
-To initiate mental health programs and services in the
Saddle Lake First Nation. To promote a positive sense of
identity and self esteem for children and youth

-To raise the awareness of community members about m
ental wellness and how to resolve conflicts in a healthy way

-initiate community activities that promote positive interaction
between parents and their children

**ACTIVITIES:**
-Provide on-site workshops. Sponsor children/youth to
conferences. Fund school year end activities, field trips

-Provide workshops that will address different emotions
children and youth feel after losing someone they love ie.
Rainbows at the Onchaminahos Elementary School – a loss
and grief program for Elementary students

-Fund activities that require parent/child interactions

5. PARENTING SKILLS

Goals:
-To enable parents to use the education and services
offered by the parenting skills program for the safety and
well being of their children.

Objectives:
-To increase the awareness of parents that the well bing
of their children is a role and responsibility that they need
to fulfil for the healthy development of their children

-To offer support to single parents and to encourage both
partners in a relationship that parenting is a joint effort
and responsibility

-To ensure a safe environment for parents who wish to
address parenting issues

-To ensure transportation, child care and nutritious meals
are provided for the children and parents in the program

Activities:
-Provide practical living skills courses based on cost or
resource sharing with other program

-Duration of program will be three days per week for a six
week period

-Workshop topics will include: Group guidelines, Budgeting,
Menu planning, Family relationships, Child development,
Colonization, Family violence, Self care plan,
Kaleidoscope (loss and grief) Family planning,
Parenting young children, Home maintenance and basic
sewing.

6.  SOLVENT/SUBSTANCE ABUSE:

Goals:
-To promote a solvent and substance free program for
Saddle Lake youth aged 12 to 17 utilizing the holistic
concept of the Medicine Wheel

-To provide a safe and healthy environment for the youth
of Saddle Lake

-To create an awareness among our youth that their
Native heritage is what makes them unique and they should
be proud of who they are

**Objectives:**
-To increase awareness and to educate the Saddle Lake
youth about the harmful effects of solvents and any form
of substance abuse

-To increase the number of Saddle Lake youth who
seek healthy alternatives

-To educate our youth about the important role each
person plays in the community and the responsibility
attached to it

**Activities:**

-To initiate and host healthy activities that are fun and sociable

-Provide a safe environment that youth will be comfortable
to come to

-Focus on youth strengths/talents/skills and use as a tool
for positive reinforcement
